What is a PyWikipediaBot?

Simply put a PyWikipediaBot is a bot that is run using pywikipedia scripts.

A longer answer to this question is that it is a collection of tools, also known as scripts, that can be invoked using a command line or terminal. It is an incredibly powerful tool, capable of performing hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of edits within a short time frame. Although it is incredibly powerful it is also incredibly hard to learn to operate for reasons of poor documentation on the internet.

What can the PyWikipediaBot do for me and my wiki?

A PyWikipediaBot can be as simple, or as complex, as you want. There are tools that can perform just about any type of edit you would ever need. Below is a list of some of the many things that you could do with the PyWikipediaBot framework.

  • Change category names - Without the use of a bot this can be an extremely long process due to the fact that there is not just a category rename button that an administrator could use. However, with the help of a PyWikipediaBot you can easily, and quickly, rename a category with hundreds of pages inside it.
  • Replace templates - There may come a time when you need to retire a template that has been used on thousands of pages. Ordinarily you wouldn't be able to easily do this, however with the help of a PyWikipediaBot you can!
  • Add a bit of text - Have you invented a new template and are trying to figure out how to get it on hundreds of pages at once? This looks like a job for PyWikipediaBot!

Intrigued? It's our hope that we've assembled a lot of easy-to-read instructions together in one place. If we've succeeded, you won't have to do a lot of Google searches to figure out how to harness the power of pywikipedia.
